A list of retro games I played back in November of 2024, along with my short reviews that I wrote on Bluesky (with some edits).
A collection of short games. Played on the SNES viva Switch Online. Was fun, tried out a few games until Revenge of the Meta Knight.
Played the Sega Genesis version (on switch) that released in 1991. And its very much an arcade game from its time (originally 1984). Decently fun, but its something best enjoy in short bursts and not something to play an hour straight, lol. Highest I got was round 12 with a score of 105480.
Played on the Switch Online system. Going to an old classic game is fun, as you can see how far things have progressed since then. Also this game is not as easy as you might think if you watched others play. After playing for an hour I got to 5-2 (used warps but no save states).
It had been a long while since the last Zelda game I played and so far I'm enjoying it, though I realize I'm not that great with the combat. I do like exploring the world and finding treasures. As of writing I got the master sword, but I plan to keep playing soon. (Edit: I finished the game after playing it for a few days.)
Played on Sega Genesis Switch Online. I heard about this game for ages but never experienced it. While I only got through the first couple of levels (with the help of save states), man they were right this game is super difficult. I do like its aesthetics and music however.
An arcade game on the NES (Switch Online) in 1985. Once I was able to learn how to jump up to platforms the game became a lot easier. I had more fun with this game than I would've thought. Furthest I got to was the Japan level thanks to balloons that let you skip a few levels.
Played on the Switch Online, I was able to complete the game within an hour. It's a pretty short game but simple and enjoyable. Had a fun time overall.
I actually don't remember sitting down to play this, so I thought I give it a try. I was only able to play just past the first mine cart level due to time, but I wouldn't mind going back and trying again. I do really like DKC's music a lot as well.
I used to play this a lot as a kid and it was something I could easily play again. The game is relaxing and you don't need to do too much so it was the perfect game for me to rest my hands and just chill. At the time of writing I did the first two scenarios.
Happy they brought this game onto the Nintendo Switch Online. Its a pretty fun puzzle game and I like the character designs and art. After playing single player mode for a while starting at 0, the highest speed I got was 47.
This was on the Genesis Switch online and was generally fun to play. Though I'm not too great at it myself since it relies on pinball physics, I did like seeing my score go up. I was at least able to make it past the first stage after playing for about an hour.
A simple game with not too much going for it, but I had a decent enough time as it is. I think I had more fun with the tracks where you race against the other NPCs. I was able to play all of the tracks.
I'll be honest if this game wasn't on the Switch Online with its rewind features I probably would've never finished it. It felt frustrating for me as I kept dying a lot due to slipping off the edge and falling, plus the controls being clunky didn't help. At least its a short game.
This is the 1986 verison played on the Anniversary Collection. I was only able to reach stage 10 after playing for an hour but I generally had a fun time, even if I fell a lot and had to be precise with platforming. The BGM is really good too.
A Puyo Puyo game but with Kirby characters for the SNES (played on Switch Online). While I am really bad at Puyo Puyo in general I still had fun with the game. I like playing this version cause of Kirby's dialogue with all the enemies he faces. After 1 hour I reached stage 6.
Surprisingly I never reached the credits of this game until I played this game for the challenge. It was a fun and relaxing time overall. I do wish I had this game when it originally came out. I probably would've played it for hours.
Despite this being a game by Game Freak it was more challenging than I thought. I still generally enjoyed it even if I was only able to play the first 3 stages within an hour. Also stage 3's casino area has a lot of bright colors and lights, which I both love and dislike at the same time.
Played on the NES Switch Online. I tried really really hard to finish the game but despite all of the rewinds and save states I just couldn't beat the very end, it was too tough for me to dodge and hit precisely on the boss. I will say I did like the game's story and cutscenes though.
Played on Switch Online. I only recall playing this in McDonalds back in the day so playing it in my own home was more relaxing. I mainly picked Yoshi and had a fun time racing around. It may be the online version but I had to reset the game a few times due to the music not playing.
Played the NES version on Switch Online. This is a decently fun puzzle game. Even tho I had some trouble figuring out how to handle the controls and how to move Toad around, I enjoyed myself. Managed to play up until round 31.
Since this was on Genesis Switch Online it was an easy access for me to play. A pretty simple and fun game all around, I generally enjoyed myself while playing it. I managed to complete the game and reach the credits.
First time actually sitting down and playing this game, and its a lot harder than I realized. Its tricky to navigate and shoot on rails at the same time. I was only able to complete a few stages, but I still had fun. I did feel a tiny bit bad for being called out on for stealing kills, lol.
Played on Switch Online. I didn't realize this game was made by Rare. I like its concept and its looks, but wasn't a fan of how the game controlled, plus I was pretty confused by what my objective was until I looked it up online. I managed to play the first 3 stages.
Since this came out in 2003, it counts. Had a fun time playing the different microgames. Some were easy to figure out and others I had to try it a 2nd time to get the timing down right. I played until I reached the credits.
Played this one since it was on PC (with some help to make it run). Generally a fun game, a bit janky but it has its charms. Hopefully I'll be able to play more soon (Edit: I completed the game fully after a few days).
Played on Switch Online, did one USA 18 hole course. Overall a decent time, and once I figured out the controls generally I was able to get the hang of it. But I am not good at golf at all. Still was a decent golf game for its time.
It was just added (in 2024) on Genesis Switch Online, so I gave it a try. I heard people say they enjoy and love this game, but for some reason I couldn't really vibe with it. I think the music is a banger though and the art looks neat, but I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay for some reason...
Played the NES version on the Switch Online. A fun puzzle game with a bit of a learning curve, but even when it got difficult I didn't feel very frustrated since you could just continue from the same level again. Managed to reach level 5 on medium speed.
Played on Switch Online. Generally a fun and easy game to play. I liked how now we start to see powerups and its fun having friends to tag along with. Due to time was only able to play for an hour, but I might play more in the future.
Played the NES version on Switch Online. Seeing references of this game for many years and now finally sitting down to play more than just the first level (I didn't realize there were 3 types of levels in this game). Overall a fun time, good to play in short bursts at a time.
